Leading agronomy and agrochemical company Agrovista UK Ltd. is a long-standing supporter of the North East Biofuels (NEB) project. NEB was set up as a means of providing a supply chain between local farmers and the Biofuels Corporation plant that recently commenced biodiesel production on Teesside. The Teesside plant will be Europe’s largest biodiesel production facility.
The key to establishing this end-market link is to develop an oilseed crushing facility near to the biodiesel plant, which will then be supplied with the oilseed rape feedstock by local growers. Agrovista’s aim is to ensure that farmers are in a position to take full advantage of this opportunity by maximising their output as a result of the highest quality agronomy advice, and access to products, varieties and techniques.
The aims of North East Biofuels are to:
- Engage with the agricultural, chemical, energy and transport sectors to develop and promote biofuel supply chains for transport, industrial and domestic use, for the benefit of the North East region;
- Advise local, regional and national Government and stakeholders on the development and implementation of biofuels policy;
- Develop and promote wider community awareness of biofuels benefits throughout the supply chains;
- Identify and assign expert and third party involvement in new business opportunities and value adding research;
- Involve and promote companies active in biofuels supply chains.
Agrovista is taking a proactive role in developing oilseed rape agronomy with the aim of improving crop yields and oil content and increasing financial returns for the farmer. Such activities include:
- Development of a ‘Biofuels Grower Network’ which gathers information from farmers in the NE and further afield, and is then analysed and returned to them in a form that enables them to easily identify where crop performance increases may be gained. Data is predominantly based on local practices and is therefore directly relevant to the project;
- Utilising the extensive Agrovista Agronomic Initiatives trials programme in conjunction with early access to new chemistry and techniques, to deliver effective agronomy advice to growers, maximising their gross margins on the crop;
- Supporting various farmer meetings and events to promote biofuels as a viable and increasingly important market for their crops, thus ensuring economically sustainable farming for the future
