Keeping winter crops in optimum condition

Plenty of winter wheat and oilseed rape crops appear well set for the season ahead. We asked three Agrovista agronomists how bioscience products can help maintain that potential over the next few weeks.

Dan Knight

Midlands

Given the wide choice of bioscience products available, the trick in maximising return on investment is recognising the requirements of each crop, and individual customers’ needs, says Dan.

“If you then match these considerations with understanding the science and development behind the products, you can then make informed decisions on where to recommend them and where not to,” he adds. Klorofill is particularly useful at key yield-building timings, such as flowering oilseed rape. “This is when we are looking to maximise photosynthesis and prolong green leaf area to build yield,” says Dan.

He favours Wholly K PGA on winter wheat at T1, but might also recommend it on flowering oilseed rape and winter beans.

“Winter wheat can’t get enough of it at T1-T2 when it is undergoing rapid growth. Potassium is a valuable component of yield and the additional nitrogen uptake is a valuable addition.

“The first three years of the YEN bean project have also suggested a positive relationship between potassium inputs and bean yields.

“I’ll also consider it where people have taken a potassium holiday, where lodging is a concern and when conditions are droughty, as potassium is important for nutrient and water regulation.”

Where additional potassium is not needed, Dan may opt for Twoxo at up to GS31 in wheat, around the main fertiliser application to give crops a boost.

The product contains 2-oxoglutaramate, a signalling molecule that stimulates the plant to increase carbon dioxide and nitrogen uptake, a combination that increases biomass and yield.

“Twoxo plays a vital part in the nitrogen and carbon pathways, helping the plant to make best use of any available nitrogen to help them through the imminent period of rapid growth,” says Dan.

Phil Warham

East Midlands

Phil Warham is happy with most of his oilseed rape across his East Midlands area. Although some oilseed rape suffered a growth check and increased pigeon damage during the recent cold spell, and some cabbage stem flea beetle larvae can be found on some side shoots, he expects most crops to bounce back.

“Oilseed rape has amazing powers of recovery, so we need to manage it accordingly to keep crops going through stem extension and into flowering to create the optimum canopy. Oilseed rape prices are still high to make good margins, notwithstanding the high price that many growers paid for this season’s fertiliser.”

Oilseed rape will soon be due its mid-flower sclerotinia fungicide and Phil advises growers to add Klorofill to help maximise green leaf area and plant biomass.

“Klorofill contains pentanoate, which reverses chlorophyll suppression that can occur during rapid growth. This helps ensure the plant’s solar panels are working as effectively as possible.”

All winter cereals will receive Wholly K PGA. “This is a fully tank-mixable product that delivers potassium through the leaf, driving growth and nitrogen uptake,” says Phil.

“It also contains L-PGA (pidolic acid) to enhance nitrogen assimilation, helping to ensure crops head towards T2 and beyond in optimum condition.”

Peter Waltham

Somerset, Wiltshire, North Dorset

Peter Waltham says Twoxo is a great option in winter wheat. “It’s one of the nicest-looking bits of biochemistry I’ve seen for a while.

“It is a great product in terms of assimilating nitrogen, a key component of amino acids (and the nucleic acids that encode them) as well as chlorophyll. In the plant it plays a vital role in boosting nitrogen use efficiency, which could be very useful for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint.

“I often use it at the T0 to T1 timing, which sits around rest of fertiliser programme, so it works very well. It tank-mixable with fungicide and is therefore flexible; manufacturer trials and my own experience with the product showing it delivers an excellent return on investment.

“I’ve had some useful results on oilseed rape as well, and if I think a crop needs a bit of a lift I’ll advise applying it at early stem extension.”
