Companion Planting In Oil Seed Rape

29/07/2014

Typically planted with oilseed rape, companion plants are designed to improve establishment of oilseed rape through rooting synergy, reducing pest and weed pressure taking up Nutrients in the autumn and releasing in the spring, increasing yield and significantly improving soil structure.

Direct-drilled with no companion plants                   Direct-drilled with mainly vetches                          Direct-drilled with mainly Berseem Clover

Two blends of companion plants have been developed, specifically depending on establishment methods

PC1 (Part number 110824)

PC1 has been developed for overall application with the crop in situations only where straw has been removed or incorporated thoroughly.

PC1 contains Common Vetch, Purple vetch and  Berseem clover
Available in 25kg bags

Drill at 20kg/ha at 1-2.5cm into good seed bed and apply slug pellets if necessary

PC3 (Part number 110844)PC3
has been developed to be used in situations where establishment is through subcast method or situations where there are high surface trash levelsPC3 is drilled at 5-7.5kg/ha (strictly according to seed rate calculator to avoid competition effects) PC3 is placed in the seed hopper WITH the OSR and is drilled in the row.  Between 2 and 5 ha are possible without seed settling according to breederPC 3 contains Common vetch and berseem clover

The higher berseem clover composition  in PC3 provides the major benefit in this scenario
