Agrovista's Axis system allows all of a grower's data to be held online, meaning the information can be accessed and shared on any connected device, its head of precision & technology Lewis McKerrow told the technical seminar.

""You can record trials and crop inspections, and even attach photos, giving a justification for your recommendations," he said.

Its FieldPro integrates Muddy Boots' Greenlight Growers Management, while MapITPro manages spatial data, which could include crop sensor or even satellite data, he explained.

Such an approach fits in with other emerging technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or ""drones""), McKerrow added.  ""They all produce data which form the basis for business decisions, and that data has to be managed.""

Meanwhile, a new pocket-sized device called a SCiO can carry out molecular analyses of everyday objects including leaves and fruit, allowing the user to ""create a database of matter"", he said.  ""We are looking to do some R & D on this in the coming season to see how it can be of use.""
