Winter wheat yield is a world record

09/09/2015

Article taken from The Northern Farmer magazine. Two new harvest world records might have been set by farmers in the region.   Tim Lamyman, who farms at Worlaby Farms, near Louth, Lincolnshire, achieved a winter wheat record by harvesting 16.5 t/ha with Reflection, a new variety he has grown for the first time.  The yield, which was adjusted to 15 per cent moisture, also smashed his own UK record, set last year, by 2 t/ha and produced an impressive 83kg/hl specific weight.  He put it down to a combination of the high-yielding variety’s characteristics and the agronomy and nutrition programmes used.  Meanwhile, Steve Tuer, of Hutton Grange Farm, near Northallerton, set an unofficial oilseed rape world record yield of 7.2t/ha with Incentive, the restored hybrid variety.  The national average is consistently below 4t/ha.

He said: “This was a dairy farm, so there is a lot of inherent fertility in the soil, plus all the slurry from our 600-sow and pig fattening unit is spread back on to the 1000 acres of arable land.  The soil is very heavy, so crops do very well in a dry year such as the one we’ve had.”

Mr Tuer who works closely with agronomists Chris Martin from Agrovista, does not believe in sowing oilseed rape early.  “This crop wasn’t sown until September 6 at a rate of 35 seed/m2 with a Vaderstad drill, after min-tilling with a Heva Combilift, followed by shallow discs and a packer.”

The fertiliser was applied in four splits totalling 220kg of nitrogen as urea.  The dates were March 10; March 20 + sulphur.  Foliar nitrogen was applied in June with the second sclerotinia spray.
Mr Martin applied an autumn phoma and Light Leaf Spot spray of Frelizon, followed by an early spring application of Monkey combined with the nutrition product, Headland Bo-La.  The Sclerotinia programme then consisted of Recital at early flower, followed three weeks later with Proline in a tank mix with Nufol.
He also yielded 12.2t/ha of Glacier winter barley and has registered a field of Kieder with the ADAS Yield Enhancement Network project – the field yielded 16/ha in 2010.
