Sulphur is an essential nutrient for plant growth, playing a vital role in protein synthesis and overall plant health. It is particularly important for crops with high oil content and those requiring significant nitrogen uptake. Sulphur deficiency can lead to stunted growth, yellowing leaves and reduced yields.
There are many options for sulphur fertilisers. The majority are soil applied alongside nitrogen fertiliser.
Elemental sulphur
Elemental sulphur is used in agriculture as a fertiliser source of sulphur. Plants cannot directly use elemental sulphur; it must first be converted to sulphate sulphur by soil microorganisms. This conversion process is influenced by factors like soil temperature, moisture and the particle size of the elemental sulphur.
Sovereign sulphur (16-50 kg/ha)
Sovereign sulphur is 90% elemental sulphur in a granular form, usually applied in late autumn designed to supply arable crops with their total spring sulphur requirement. The product is unique as it breaks down with rainfall, converting to plant-usable sulphate as soils warm up in spring. It is easy to spread using a conventional fertiliser spreader.
Gypsum
Gypsum, a mineral composed of calcium sulphate, is widely used in agriculture to improve soil structure, particularly in areas with high magnesium or sodium levels or where soil is compacted.
Liquid Gypsum (5-20L/ha)
A liquid soil conditioner containing 6% calcium and 10% sulphur that helps soil flocculation: improving workability, drainage and root exploration to support crop establishment.
Sulfacal
A natural granulated source of calcium sulphate which addresses widespread sulphur deficiency in crops and grassland by providing sulphate which is available to the plant. It also provides calcium in a soluble form, which can improve soil structure and has been proven to spread accurately to 42m.
Polyhalite
Polyhalite is a naturally occurring, sulphate-based mineral used in fertilisers containing potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulphur.
POLY4
Poly4 is a multi-nutrient, low-chloride fertiliser suitable for organic farming containing sulphur, potash, magnesium and calcium.
Foliar Sulphur
Thio S (3-5 L/ha)
A foliar-applied, high-sulphur fertiliser with nitrogen for rapid correction of sulphur deficiency in agricultural and horticultural crops. It contains nitrogen (N): 151 g/l (as ammoniacal nitrogen) and sulphur (SO3): 862 g/l.
Kurus (3-5 L/ha)
A highly soluble, plant-available potassium source to support a wide range of crops growth containing potassium (K2O): 360 g/l and sulphur (SO3): 630 g/l.
Sulfastim (2.5-10L/ha)
Sulfastim is a systemic sulphur fertiliser and biostimulant co-formulation containing sulphur, nitrogen, amino acids, humates and betaines.
Epso Top (5-25 kg/ha)
Epso Top is an effective foliar fertiliser granule containing magnesium and sulphur.
