Coir substrate producer, Botanicoir, is hosting an anniversary event at Fruit Focus this year, inviting visitors to come along to stand number 302 at 12.00 noon on Tuesday 22 July, to join them in raising a glass to celebrate their success
The meeting started off with an introduction by Dave Gardner of the RASE. MR Gardner stated that the wheat/oilseed rape system of farming which has underpinned British arable production for the last 30 years was broken due to the joint issues of soil organic matter and the continuing threat of blackgrass.
Good establishment of oilseed rape will be even more critical than usual this summer as farmers face a second season without neonicotinoid seed treatments. Slow growing crops will be more susceptible to all seeding pests and diseases, but are especially prone to early attach from cabbage stem flea beetle, which can wipe out a backward crop as it struggles to come through the ground.

Oilseed rape yields on farm have barely increased over the past quarter century and currently average just over 3t/ha. However, the crop can produce well over double that in trials and is theoretically capable of yielding over 10t/ha, says Agrovista technical manager Chris Martin.
Sowing companion plants alongside oilseed rape can deliver significant yield benefits on crops planted at optimal wide row rates of 15 seeds/m of row.
Using a fungicide to control disease in trials of maize last year has also produced some added benefit
