Agrovista has launched Axis, the cloud-based agronomy system it has been developing over the last three and a half years.
Axis has been developed in-house by Agrovista since it acquired the Plantsystem crop weather data platform in 2012. It has used this as the base for a fully integrated system that can assimilate and collate farm data from a number of disparate and collate farm data from a number of disparate sources, including new crop recording software from the Muddy Boots software brand.
“With the growing adoption of decision support and precision farming systems, the information being generated by farmers is growing exponentially,” explains Lewis McKerrow, Agrovista’s precision technology manager, who has overseen the development of Axis. “For some time there has been an increasing onus for the industry to find a way of streamlining its record-keeping processes and data flow.
“Our intention was always to make the system cloud-based, so that farmers could access and add to their information via multiple platforms including smartphones, statelite-mapping equipment and their PCs,” Mr McKerrow continues. “Axis will be very practical to use, with an intuitive App-style access screen. It will include a host of really practical management aids like yield and soil mapping, compliance data alerts, technical agronomic updates, 7-day weather forecasts, spray-window forecasts and product labels.
“Hosting the information in the cloud also means that farmers can give their advisers access to their account for the two-way exchange of information and advice.”
The Axis platform is integrated with the Muddy Boots Greenlight Grower Management software, incorporating its online crop management system, field recording and data sharing functions. It also contains the MapIT Pro web-based mapping module to display field boundaries and cropping, and allow users to import yield maps, set up custom field zones, and generally manage their precision farming data.
“What makes Axis invaluable as a business tool is the system’s ability to exchange information between devices, people and software systems,” notes Mr McKerrow. “Over the coming years we will continue to develop Axis to allow farmers and advisers to integrate all of their devices, systems and advisory information into the Axis cloud.” Mr McKerrow says Axis will help farmers reduce the paperwork and simplify record keeping associated with compliance. For the first time, it will allow growers with precision farming capability to integrate this with the recording and reminder functions of key dates and times for the field tasks.
“This management element is lacking in many of the simple systems farmers are using. Axis will be a useful tool for co-ordinating these types of disparate – but valuable – data sources and will help in the production of complete and accurate records,” he says.
“Within the next few years we will find that live data connections between tractor and office will be commonplace. Farmers will be able to send prescription plans like spray recommendations in real time to both the operator and the machinery and will receive the completed data back all as one complete streamlined affair. This type of full farm operation integration is very much the focus of the Axis vision,” Mr McKerrow concludes.
Axis will be available as three packages. The Axis info package is free. It has view-only access to Greenling Grower Management, a 3-day weather forecast, and a basic MapIT Pro Goopgle mapping system, in addition to product labels and data sheets; weekly fertiliser updates; a live grain market feed; a variety selection tool; key technical documents and compliance information plus a ‘greening’ calculator tool. The Axis Field Pro and MapIT Pro packages build on the basic Axis Info with more interactive features, longer weather forecasting and soil, yield and sensor mapping to suit variable rate input applications. These will be available from the summer.
