At an evening meeting we held for agronomists near Oldmeldrum on Tuesday, the winter wheats were approaching, or ready, for the T1 spray as is most of the wheat in the North East. The winter barley had received their T1 and are now racing towards T2. So what will you need to spend over the coming months to maximise your yields and returns?
Where a T0 spray was applied to wheat, Septoria should have dried up, as it had in the Oldmeldrum field of Horatio we examined. At T1 it’s going to be beneficial to apply 0.75l/ha of chlorothalonil along with either Variano or Nebula.
On the flag leaf you will get the most cost flexibility from Eclipse + Priaxor. Depending on the disease levels and weather risk, Priaxor dose rates can start at as low as 0.6l/ha up to 1l/ha in higher rainfall situations. If you want to save your second strobilurin for your ear spray, then opt for 0.75l/ha of Librax at T2. The Xemium in both Priaxor and Librax is very stable and dose rate flexible.
At T3, Ennobe or Monkey are very good options and consistently good for mycotoxin control; and they are both very cost-effective. Winter barley is ready to start growing rapidly and will need a PGR to keep it standing at T1; Options are Canopy 0.8lt and Optimus at a rate of 0.15 – 0.2lt/ha. Rhynchosporium is taking hold now; for a cost-conscious option, we’re recommending 0.6l/ha of Jaunt at T1 and another application of 0.5l/ha + Arizona at T2. Low soil sulphur levels are an issue following the wet winter, so applying 1-2l/ha of Magnus Pro could be a really worthwhile option for both wheat and barley at T2. Colleagues have been seeing dramatic responses from crops treated with Magnus Pro south of the border. Potash levels are also low, so an application of Kudos could be beneficial.
There has been limited sprays applied to oilseed rape yet in the North East for sclerotinia, but we are recommending a two-spray programme. Light Leaf Spot is still rife and the sclerotinia inoculum levels are high, but, as yet, the trigger of a minimum of 11oC during the day and 7oC at night has not yet been reached, so sclerotinia is not yet active. My recommendation for the early flowering spray is 0.8l/ha of Galileo + Revolt; make sure that you don’t add boron to this tank mix, because it will curdle like adding cordial to Baileys! For your second spray a good option is 0.8l/ha of Recital. Add in 3l/ha of Kudos with the first spray if you can, as there is a very high crop demand for potash. With the second spray, add 1l/ha Terrasorb.
