Agrovista agronomist Richard Tresidder has been honoured with the title of Arable Adviser of the Year at the Farmers Weekly 2024 Awards.
Committed to supporting local farmers, Cornwall-based Richard serves around 200 customers from Land’s End to Exeter, providing tailored advice and innovative solutions to meet their diverse needs.
The Farmers Weekly Awards celebrate excellence in British agriculture, acknowledging those who innovate and drive the industry forward.
Richard's agronomy journey began 11 years ago after spending 15 years as a sprayer operator. His passion for crop management drove him to pursue qualifications in agronomy, leading to his current role at Agrovista.
He is a BASIS and FACTS-qualified agronomist, with additional credentials in soil and water management as well as advanced potato cultivation.
“I felt massively humbled on receiving this award,” Richard said. “I have spent the last 10 years building up my business, helped by some very special people – colleagues at Agrovista who have given me so much support, and my customers, the most fantastic bunch of people you could work with, some of whom have become very good friends as well.
“There are plenty of agronomic challenges this far west, and repaying the trust my growers put in me certainly keeps me on my toes. To be recognised in this way, for a job that I love doing, really is special.
“A lot of people have also said how great it is to have some news that promotes Cornwall in the best light. Being Cornish born and bred I’m relishing that!”
Richard's hands-on approach is evident in his work with Brew Farm at Land's End. He has guided farmer Adrian and Ann Semmens and their daughter Emma in transitioning from dairying to more sustainable agricultural practices, incorporating options from Defra’s Sustainable Farming Incentive scheme.
By implementing innovative techniques such as min-till and direct drilling, Richard is helping the farm achieve a more sustainable rotation while enhancing productivity.
His expertise also extends to tackling local agronomic challenges, including pest control for brassicas and disease management in wheat. Richard has initiated trials for effective fungicides against septoria, demonstrating his commitment to advancing local agricultural practices.
As he continues to mentor upcoming agronomists, Richard remains dedicated to his field-based role, focusing on reducing travel while maintaining strong client relationships. His personal and professional dedication has earned him recognition as a leader in the field, ensuring that he remains a vital resource for farmers across Cornwall.
